iCloud: Lock and track your device using Lost Mode
Lost Mode locks your iOS device, Apple Watch, or Mac so that others
can’t access your personal information. It also tracks any changes to
the location of your iOS device or Apple Watch. If you can’t find your
device, turn on Lost Mode right away using Find My iPhone on iCloud.com.
If you have Family Sharing set up, you can turn on Lost Mode for family
members’ devices, too. For more information, see the Apple Support
article If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen.
When your device is in Lost Mode:
- You can display a custom message on the screen. For example, you may want to indicate that the device is lost or how to contact you.
- Your device doesn’t display alerts or play a sound when you receive messages or notifications or if any alarms go off. You still receive phone calls and FaceTime calls.
- Any credit or debit cards set up for Apple Pay on your device are suspended for your device, even if it’s offline. Apple Pay is also disabled for your device. You can resume using suspended cards on your device after you unlock it and sign in to iCloud. For more information, see the Apple Support articles Use Wallet on your iPhone or iPod touch and Use Touch ID on MacBook Pro.
Turn on Lost Mode or lock a device
- Click All Devices, then select the device you want to track or lock.
- Click Lost Mode or Lock.
- Follow the onscreen instructions, keeping the following in mind:
- If your iOS device or Apple Watch has a passcode, it’s required to unlock the device. Otherwise, you’re asked to create a passcode now.
- If you’re trying to place a family member’s iOS device in Lost Mode, and the device doesn’t have a passcode set, that person’s Apple ID password must be entered on this computer.
- If you’re trying to lock a family member’s Mac, that person’s Apple ID password must be entered on this computer.
- If you’re asked to enter a phone number, enter a number where you can be reached. The number appears on the device’s Lock screen.
- If you’re asked to enter a message, you may want to indicate that the device is lost or how to contact you. The message appears on the device’s Lock screen.
Note: If you forget the passcode, or if you set an EFI firmware password on your Mac before it was lost, then lock it and later find it, you may need to take it to an authorized repair center to unlock it.
